Blood samples, handling and shipment
For patient and health care provider
Minimum 3 plasma (serum or blood) samples are required:
| Sample #1 |
As soon as possible after RA diagnosis (max. 6 months after diagnosis), collected after you have filled in the form on this Web site, and after you have received and accepted the terms of testing. |
Sample #2 |
1 year after initial diagnosis - email request will be forwarded from IIR. |
Sample #3 |
5 years after initial diagnosis - email request will be forwarded from IIR. |
More tests may be carried out, if specifically requested and accepted by IIR.
We advocate tests #2 and 3, because all RA patients, who in our own preliminary study converted from an aAb IL-1a-negative to an aAb-positive state, had very aggressive disease with severe joint erosions 5-10 years after diagnosis. Fortunately, these patients were few compared to those remaining aAb-negative. If this can be predicted at an early stage, initiation of more effective therapy may prevent joint destruction.
Blood collection - preferred method:
A. Venous peripheral blood is drawn into a STERILE container with anticoagulant (EDTA). After centrifugation or sedimentation, the plasma supernatant is drawn with a sterile pipette or syringe and immediately transferred to a sterile plastic tube with screw cap.
1 ml (maximum 3 ml) plasma is required. Keep cool, but do not freeze.
Blood collection - alternative methods:
Venous peripheral blood is drawn into a STERILE plastic tube with screw cap and without additives.
B. After coagulation, the serum supernatant is drawn with a sterile pipette or syringe and immediately transferred to a sterile plastic tube with screw cap.
1 ml (maximum 3 ml ) serum is required. Keep cool, but do not freeze.
C. The blood is forwarded as is.
2 ml (maximum 5 ml) full-blood is required.
Handling and shipment of the sample:
Seal the plastic tube thoroughly, mark the tube with sample date and patient initials, pack appropriately, and forward immediately and by air mail to us (PLEASE SEE OUR EMAIL FOR INSTRUCTIONS).
It is absolutely essential that your shipment contains:
- The sample, sealed thoroughly and properly marked with your email address, the sample date and patient initials.
- A certified cheque for coverage of our expenses for test #1: US$ 100
(Only needed with test #1).
- The signed IIR disclaimer, forwarded to you by email or printed out from the Web site.
